Big Yoga Flex-Ability Review and Giveaway

When I think of Yoga, I think ouch. I am a bigger person and my body parts do not want to move like they should so me doing yoga would be pretty funny looking and painful, so I thought. Would you believe me if I told you plus size women can do yoga as well? Yup, we bigger women can do yoga and get all the great benefits from it as smaller women.

Recently I was sent a copy of Big Yoga Flex-Ability with Meera Patricia Kerr to review. Big Yoga Flex-Ability was designed for an older clientele, or anyone with stiffness, extra weight, or injury.  One thing Meera believes is “You don’t have to be thin to enjoy the benefits of yoga!”

A Little About Big Yoga:

After teaching Yoga for about 25 years, my body began to change, and so did my Yoga practice.  With more curves to accomodate, and belly and boobs getting in the way, I began to adapt classical Yoga postures for my comfort.  I was inspired to share what I was learning about my body with others like me, who may not look like the standard Yoga model, but who are interested in staying fit and healthy regardless of their size.  The result was my first DVD, Big Yoga Hatha 1, a 60 minute practice that Dr. Dean Ornish has called “invigorating and restorative”.

My new book, Big Yoga:  A Simple Guide for Bigger Bodies, was published in spring of 2010, from Square One Publishers.  The new DVD, Big Yoga Flex-Ability,  was released a few weeks later.  It focuses on toning the muscles that support the joints, and freeing the joints of the toxins that make us stiff.  It’s ideal for anyone  who is healing the body from injuries, or folks who are challenged by extra weight, stiffness, or couch-potato-ism.

My Personal Opinion:

When I first put the DVD in, I was thinking to myself that I would have issues trying to do this, I have bad knees, and my flex-ability went out the door years ago.  In the first Chapter of this DVD Meera takes the time to show you different ways you can do things with out it being to hard on yourself, or your body. Meera actually walks you through different ways you can do the yoga, that is the easiest on you. After all yoga is about relaxation right?

This was still a bit hard for me, only because I am not use to it, you can not take an almost full couch potato and make them a yoga expert over night. Meera also shows how to properly breath, when doing any kind of physical activity it is very important that you know proper breathing techniques.

I will be using Big Yoga, in my weekly exercising routine, not for my actual workout but to help clear my mind and help my body move more smoother. I really love that Meera made this DVD because she knows how difficult it can be for a bigger person to move. I know with some workout DVDs and such that I have tired, there is no way I can do some of the moves they do.

If you are a bigger person, and wanting to become more flex-able I highly recommend this DVD, I do not see it helping me lose weight, but it certainly will help me become more flex able, and make my bones say thank you.

Learned from her blog that if you cant sleep at night, you can do a simple pose which helps reduce cortisol in the bloodstream and turns on the “relaxation response”; you can stretch our your legs in front of you, stretch arms overhead on an inhale, and fold yourself down over the legs on an exhale.
