Living with Diabetes

Diabetes is one of those silent killers. If you are not tested for it and it goes undiscovered it can slowly kill your body. With diabetes running strong on both sides of the family for my daughter, we have her checked regularly. When she was two we were told she was borderline, now that she is older her blood sugar runs normal.

Recently, our nephew in law moved in with us, and he is type 2 diabetes, he only found out about 2 years ago. Last night as we ate dinner we were all talking. The conversation was how my husband and I have went to a more healthier lifestyle. Our pasta is now whole grain, our breads and crackers whole grain, very little cheese, and hardly no red meat or pork.

We do almost all ground turkey and chicken. Our spaghetti I am not sure you can even call spaghetti… We use… whole grain penne pasta, tomatoes, garlic, onions, mushrooms, spaghetti sauce, ground turkey, and a lot of the times we will mix in a bag of veggies, we like using broccoli, cauliflower, and carrots.

The veggies fill us up so no more going back for seconds. Anyways, our nephew was talking about how since being over here with us his blood sugar has dropped a lot. He was stating when he was living next door with his wife, and my husband’s mom his blood sugar was always in the 400 range, now it is down in the 200’s, which is still high.

Reason being next door they cook with OIL… YUCK, they eat JUNK. I mean junk, soda, chips, cookies, cakes, you name it and it’s junk chances are they have it in that house NOW.

I am not saying we don’t eat junk from time to time, but the junk we eat isn’t made from a box. Almost all of our sweets are made from scratch, so I know what is going in them. Chocolate syrup made from scratch, brownies… yup made from scratch.

Home made cooking is not only better for you, it taste so much better! I am still waiting for the nephew to cook us something as yummy as what we have been cooking him!
