Business Education: Learning about Yourself

When you go to a school like WSU to get your education in the field of business, much of the course is going to teach you about how to run and manage a business, how to hire people, how to direct employees, and more. For many people, these things are the main focus. Students often have a desire to work in the field, but they lack the practical knowledge of how to do these things. Improper management can be ruinous to an otherwise good business idea.

However, one thing that you may find interesting is that a lot of the focus is also going to be on simply learning more about yourself. What are your own strengths and weaknesses? What can you do best and how can you apply that to a field that you love? Should you work for someone else, or should you go right out and create a start-up, working as your own boss and trying to grow the company into what you have always dreamed it could be? Answering these questions can help you decide what you should do when you get out of school, giving you the focus that you need to go along with your education.

As you go through the course, remember that everyone is going to be different. You should not try to force yourself to fit into a box just because you think it represents what you should do. Instead, you should work on finding out what path would be best for you because it fits the most with who you are already. This way, you do not have to spend time trying to change yourself or do something that you hate, but you can put all of your time and effort into having as much success as possible.

For example, some people are great at following directions and managing people, but they are not innovators who come up with new ideas. These people would be best suited for management positions within existing companies where they are relied on to make sure that things go smoothly. Others are more creative, and they are not able to work within someone else’s framework. They may be best suited for a start-up company. Both types of people are needed in the business world, and the best companies are the ones where these people all work together.
