Three Simple Space-Saving Tips for Dorms

For students planning to move away to college, that summer after finishing high school and before starting college is an exciting one. Figuring out the classes you’ll take, who your roommate will be, and how you’re going to get all your stuff to school are all major, first-time events.

That last question is the one that often gets students hung-up, though. Most dorm rooms are smaller than the bedrooms students had at home, and given that they’ll be sharing it with at least one other person, there is a big lifestyle change that happens when moving into dormitories for the first time.

The biggest thing new students need to understand is that space is at a premium. There are ways to make the most of what space you do have though, and here are a few suggestions.

Futons – The old college stand-by, futons offer seating for multiple people, as well as a spare bed for guests or lounging. Two uses from one product counts for a lot in a dorm.

Bean Bag Chairs – While some may see them as childish, beanbags are actually perfect for dorms. Able to be squeezed into virtually any space, they’re supremely comfortable for relaxing or studying.

Coordinate – Likely, you’ll find yourself with a roommate freshman year. To make sure you don’t wind up with more things than places for them, or to keep from bringing two of everything, try to talk with your roommate ahead of time and decide what each person will contribute to the shared space.
