3 Ways To Save On Your Heating Bill This Winter

Moving from the North to the South, I learned real fast that winter months are no-where near as cold as the winter months up North. When I lived up North our heating bills were always extremely high. After moving down South I knew since the winter months were not as cold our heating bill should be cheaper. However, I was wrong, it seemed as though the heating bill became more and we were not as warm.

Shortly before moving into our home the previous people who were living here had a new central heat and air unit put in. They had made mention to us that it never heated or cooled properly. My husband decided to have his friend who happens to be in the heating and cooling field look at the unit. He had stated that IF the unit isn’t properly cleaned it can burn up, which would give the issues we were having.

When owning anytime of heating and cooling unit it’s important that they stay clean and clear of debris. Not only does this improve the life of the unit it also prevents fires and them breaking down when the weather is either to cold or to hot. We learned the unit was clean, so the next cause could have been the duct work. After looking at the duct work it was discovered whoever installed the system didn’t properly install the duct work.

We had large gaps in the duct work which means the heat was escaping and the cold outside air was coming in. This lead to high electric bills and a cold home!

With being a home owner one thing we have learned is take no short cuts when improving your home. When short cuts are taken you end up spending more. We were not the ones who had paid for the central heat and air unit so we couldn’t demand the duct work be fixed.

We did however learn some important money saving tips to keep the cost of the heating bill down!

3 Ways To Save On Your Heating Bill This Winter

1.) Have a reputable HVAC company such as Halo Heating and Cooling service your central heat and air unit every year. This will ensure your unit stays cleaned and charged. Not only does a clean system lower your electric bill it will also expand the life of your unit.

2.) Make sure any cracks in the floor or walls are sealed! You will be amazed on how much heat can escape allowing the cold air to come in from a small crack.

3.) Plastic wrap windows and I like to also cover the plastic with blankets. This allows my home to stay warmer with a lower setting on the thermostat. Which also reduces my electric bill and makes me one happy home owner.

When searching for a reputable HVAC company make sure they stand behind their work.

What are somethings you do to reduce your heating bill in the winter months?
