Sewing Tips For Beginners

Sewing has always been a great hobby for everyone, but many people step back because they don’t know the basics and have a little fear about it. Well, just to bring a smile on your face, let me tell that learning to sew is no big deal. As far as basics are concerned, we are here to help you with some sewing tips for beginners. You don’t have to ponder upon techniques and hurt yourself by trying out needles yourself. Given below is the guide for beginners on how to go about with sewing and how to handle the sewing machine with effectiveness.

  • The first and foremost thing to remember is that “You can do it!” You have to do away with the nervousness you have in mind, and just relax. Leave behind the hesitation and take charge of your fabric in your own hands.
  • Now, you must know how to purchase a sewing machine without which you can do nothing. Little you may know that old machines are always good when you are learning to sew for the first time. They are always better than brand new ones, and you should always look for second hand machines in the Craiglist.
  • Now the most important thing you must is that, start everything with hands. Take up needle and thread along with a piece of fabric. Start sewing patterns and become well-versed with the technique. Because there are few things which you cannot fix by machines. It becomes necessary to hold a needle and do it with perfection. So you must always start with hand sewn stuffs, so that you know where to run the machine.
  • Approximation is the necessary evil. It can be helpful and sometimes it can be dangerous. Since this is a beginner’s guide, I would suggest you to rely upon your measurement tapes instead of just visually analyzing the measurement. Later on after some practice, you will automatically get an idea about the measurement and cutting.
  • When it comes to handling sewing machines, the first tip you need to know is about the thread guide. It should always be kept at the highest position right above the needle. Because, as soon as you start the hand-wheel, the needle will unthread. Every single time you must make a habit of checking the thread guide twice before sewing.
  • Another important thing to notice is the quality of your fabric. You must properly know about the ratio between sharpness of needle and thickness of fabric. Without this, you will end wasting your money to buy a box full of needle. A thin needle when used for thick clothes like denim will break immediately. Hence, you must always have the basic knowledge of needles and fabric.
  • Before starting, you must turn the hand-wheel in both clockwise as well as anti-clockwise direction to check if the needle is moving smoothly. You should make sure that your needle is perfectly getting along with fabric. Take care that there is no thread jam and you have perfectly oiled your machine. Make one or two stitches by moving your hand-wheel slowly, and then start your work.
  • Whenever you need to turn the fabric to sew the corners, you must always keep your needle embedded down in your cloth. This will sew the corners perfectly and will not lead to any loose thread in the series of stitches. The corners will be perfectly aligned if you are keeping the needle down. You can take it as small tip because some of the professionals also miss this hack.
  • Every time you see a loose or too tight thread between the stitches, it may give you disappointment. But you must always rethread that part, as this will solve your problem to 99%. Even if your machine is skipping the stitches, you can try rethreading in order to fix this problem too.
  • Along with the quality of fabric, you must also make sure the quality of thread. It should be absolutely compatible with your fabric. If the thickness of your fabric does not match with the strength of thread, then it will not stitch perfectly. The thread will break in between and you will have to struggle to rethread the same.
  • In order to sew in straight line, you should never focus on needle. Your focus point should be fabric. As a beginner, you will have a practice to maintain this focus point. Hence, you must draw a straight line using light colored chalk, and you must run the stitches only on that line. Slowly when your hands will fit into all types of fabric, you will have a good control over the straight stitching technique.

Therefore, by following the above mentioned tips you can learn sewing and handle the sewing machine with great efficiency.
