1. Socialize

One of the first steps on this to teach a puppy guide is to socialize your new puppy! Eight to twenty weeks is a critical period for this step! The goal is to have your pup feel comfortable wherever they are.

Take them to places you go often. And introduce them to as many people as possible, and show them how exciting and fun the world can be!

2. Let the Puppy Have Their Alone Time

You want your puppy to socialize, but you also want them to be ok by themselves. Whether it’s work, a party, or other events, at some point your new puppy is going to be alone. Sometimes for eight-plus hours.

Avoid having them develop separation anxiety by introducing them to “alone time.”  Achieve this by having them in a crate or playing pen with you sitting nearby. And then little by little, increase the distance between you two.

I know it’s hard. But you have to be strong for your new puppy!

3. Potty Training

The toughest part of puppy training, but an important step!

Consistency is key. Schedule meals and water. Celebrate when they use the desired location, and correct them if they make a mistake.

Mind your temper, supervise when you can, and soon your new puppy won’t be leaving you any undesired gifts.

4. The Joys of Chew Toys

New puppy rules 101: the more chew toys, the better. Having a variety of chew toys for your tail-wagger will help you learn what their preferences are. And it will help to teach them what’s safe to chew on and what is not.

5. Obedience Training

Skills like name recognition and basic commands will help you and your new puppy live your best life. Remember, positive reinforcement always works best!
