How much will living in New York cost you as a student?

New York is one of the most popular places in the world. Universally renowned for its fast-paced lifestyle, New York is known as the city that never sleeps.

Students whose schools and institutions are around New York find the city irresistible. Yet, staying in New York doesn’t come free. The cost of living in New York is one of the highest of any city in the world.

This consequently makes it hectic for New York University students to look for cheap and affordable accommodation in this vibrant city. Students will have to decide for themselves whether to go for an apartment off-campus or to use the university dorm facilities.

It’s important to understand the cost of living in New York has more to it than just housing. The cost of living in the Big Apple includes feeding, transportation, as well as entertainment. Notably, all these are way higher than the median average.

NYU Students who cannot afford to live in New York may commute many miles to go to school or their part-time jobs to cover their living costs.

However, if you live far away or getting a part-time job is stressful for you, then you could make good use of the NYU housing scheme that is specially created for students to have access to affordable housing.

Although a little more expensive than the average residential facility in universities located in other states, the NYU housing option is a far cheaper alternative for students residing in New York with residence halls situated at Greenwich Village as well as Brooklyn Heights.

There are a whole lot of options for students in NYU with different types of school apartments for different categories of students. These include:

  • Apartments for freshmen as well as upper-classmen like the Alumni and Greenwich Hall.
  • Apartments exclusively for freshmen like the Founders Hall and Linton Hall.
  • Apartments only for upper-classmen such as Gramercy Green and Carlyle Court.
  • Finally, apartments for graduate students and upper-class men like the Palladium Hall.

The school provides different types of facilities with houses equipped with kitchens while residential halls typically have no kitchen available. Students will generally be assigned more than one roommate to share the residential facilities. Although the cost of rent in such a residence is higher than the median in other institutions, it’s still not as high as renting an apartment on your own.

Staying on-campus usually comes with meal plans. Therefore, you do not have to worry about the cost of food. This is not the same for students living in apartments with the expense of rent added to the cost of groceries, ordering out, or making your meals.

All these make up for an expensive lifestyle in the Big Apple.

Living in New York can be very intimidating at first for a student, both culturally and financially. However, when they get used to the fast-paced lifestyle, students find the allure of the Big Apple impossible to resist.
