Cats are very popular pets because they seem so self-sufficient and independent. On the contrary, cats need a lot of cuddles and fuss. They enjoy being stroked and love to play just like a puppy would. Toys and chasing games are an important part of their exercise plan, especially if they are indoor cats. Cats that are allowed to roam outside will ignore all human boundaries. They may wander onto the road, through your neighbor’s flower beds and even up onto your roof. Obviously, there are lots of dangers to consider when taking on a cat.

Rabbits are similar in size to a cat, but they tend to be kept outdoors in runs and hutches. Rabbits can be trained to live indoors, and enjoy being petted by humans. However, teeth can become long and uncomfortable if your rabbit doesn’t have enough to chew on. Fur can also become matted without regular grooming, particularly for those that spend a lot of time in a hutch. Bunnies don’t tend to live as long as dogs or cats, and they can be vulnerable to urban foxes and other hunting creatures.

Small furry pets like hamsters, rats, and guinea pigs are great first pets for kids. They are happy with minimal human contact and are quite good at keeping themselves clean. Their cages will need clearing out daily, and water and food dispensers replenished. However, for the family with no garden, these can be ideal pets.

All pets will need veterinary care at least once a year. This can include vaccinations, medication and first aid attention. Many pet owners choose an insurance scheme to reduce the size of big veterinary bills. The right diet and plenty of mental stimulation are important factors to consider too. Pets can get bored and then their behavior may prove challenging. Some people have more than one pet, so the animals can keep each other company. Finally, consider how the rest of the family will get on with a new pet. Is everyone ready for a new pet?
